Walk An Hour In My Shoes...

Between 2000 and 2010, the number of Hispanic residents in Fond du Lac County more than doubled (an increase of 120%). In the City of Ripon, the same is true with five percent of the population now Hispanic according to Census 2010. In an effort to provide insights into our multicultural community the University of Wisconsin-Extension with the assistance of the Office of Community Engagement will be hosting a special workshop:

Walk an Hour in My Shoes
Workshop Teaches Cultural Awareness
A professional development workshop on Hispanic and Latino culture will be held on Friday, September 7, from 9am – 1pm on the Ripon College campus. Walk an Hour in My Shoes is sponsored by the UW-Extension of Fond du Lac County at no charge in room B12 of the Pickard Commons (Elm and Congress, Ripon). Registration is limited to 30 participants.

The workshop helps professionals in many fields to work more effectively with this growing population. Participants will learn about cultural similarities and differences, such as verbal and non-verbal cues, in professional interactions.

Previous workshops of Walk an Hour in my Shoes have filled up quickly. Donna Richards, a former village clerk, spoke highly of it, saying it taught her "how to begin to develop relationships in another culture’s community from a customer service and community-building perspective." Business owners, local government employees and health care workers, as well as teachers, clergy, and law enforcement officers, are encouraged to register early.

To register for September 7, call (920) 929-3173 or email Gloria.Kelroy@ces.uwex.edu.
